Why are MIDI cables not included? Good question! :) First, I (the author) was under a length constraint by the publisher. The Audio Wiring Guide had to be no more than a certain length. Since almost all MIDI cables are pre-fabricated, and they are not >audio< cables, I chose to omit them. Further, there are already good instructions available online for how to wire MIDI cables. I deliberately chose to focus on wiring instructions that are not commonly available. Why re-invent the wheel? (grin)
Regarding iron tip temperature, this is highly dependent on the size of the tip, the size of the work, and the heat range of the iron. Most medium-price soldering irons are not variable temperature, with the heat range being set by the tip used, or by the heating coil of the iron itself. As a general rule, an applied heat of approximately 700 degrees (F) >at the tip< is good, but silver solder requires more heat, as does soldering large items. The transfer of heat from the tip to the work itself cools down the iron. When in doubt, >always< experiment on scrap materials first.
