Great study resource,
This review is from: MCTS 70-640 Cert Guide: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring (Hardcover)
The first thing I'll point out about this cert guide is that it covers 2008 R2, which most don't since they were written for Server 2008 and never updated once R2 came out. That alone makes this book worth its while, in my opinion.
Tagging along with the other reviewers - this is a great study resource that will definitely help prep you for the exam. I'd recommend this to my friends who are taking the exam, and I recommend it to you, as well.
The book starts out, as most do, with a brief intro and some exam prep tips, but if you're looking for a 10-page resource on what the actual exam looks like - it isn't here. It doesn't need to be, either, but some books do through it in there even though I never read those parts b/c I've taken enough exams to know what to expect. All of the material on the Microsoft outline for the exam is in here. All of the major features for 2008/R2 are listed and explained. If you're starting out, this is a great resource because everything is explained clearly & succinctly. If you're experienced, this is still useful because you can't know everything and this book helps fill in the gaps.
The writing is well done and not boring or monotonous.
The real-life practice walk-throughs get the job done, but that's about all they do. They show you how to do the basics (including screenshots) and that might be enough for most of the exam questions, but they won't help you if you get in a pickle in a real-life problem. This isn't a fault with this study guide - all the others suffer through this - I'm just warning you that once you do become, say, a DNS administrator, you may need to pick up a secondary reference manual for the nitty-gritty walk-throughs (and don't count on Google, especially if your DNS is acting up!).
The beginning of each chapter has a "Do I Know This Already?" quiz that varies between 7 and 14 or so questions for each chapter, with the average being around 12 questions. The questions are fine refreshers, but, as another reviewer noted, they aren't 100% what you're going to find on the exam. Not surprising, since the author isn't one of the ones who made the questions for the MS exam in the first place. That said, the questions are challenging enough and help drive some points home. The practice exam has 120 questions which follow the same lines as those at the beginning of each chapter. All of the answers are explained in detail, and an explanation is provided as to why the wrong answers are wrong for the practice quiz only. I hate books that don't say why the wrong answers are wrong, so I was happy to have the explanations for the practice quiz - I just wish that the same was provided for the chapter questions, too. A long explanation is provided as to why the chapter question answers are correct IS provided, which does somewhat make up for it.
