So, in case you weren't hip to the backstory on your favorite "kindie rock" performers, Caspar Babypants is Chris Ballew from awesome 90s band Presidents of the USA. Realizing that my own personal collection of Metallica and Queensryche was probably not appropriate for (or appealing to) my toddler, I had to branch out and find some kiddie music that wouldn't make me want to gouge my eyes out.
A friend mentioned Caspar Babypants and the MANY free shows they play in the Seattle area, so I figured I'd check this out. And OMG, both my daughter and I LOVE this album. It's a mix of traditional kid songs re-done in innovative ways (shoo fly, don't bother me) and original music with a definite toddler focus (Legend of the Bone). From the first listen we both liked it, and have played it on repeat often in the house on rainy days. It's now migrated to the car as well, and is a surefire way to keep her happy in her rear-facing carseat (oh the injustice of being a young toddler!).
Even my picky husband likes it and doesn't mind listening to it many times over. I find myself singing these songs in my head even when I'm not with my girl, and it doesn't bother me. The arrangements are quite brilliant, actually - simple and spare enough for toddlers while still being interesting, and the lyrics are clear and easy to understand (and sing along to!). I like this one the best of all the Caspar Babypants albums and it's been a great "new baby" gift for my non-Seattle friends, too, since they typically haven't heard of this awesome performer.
We don't listen to kid-music-only in my house, but it's sure nice to have something my daughter recognizes, likes, and from which she won't learn bad words.
