Great Desk Lamp - 4 years of daily use and not a single problem.,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Z-Bar High Power LED Lamp- Metallic Black/Cool Generation 2
I wanted a lamp that is low-profile and also has a good amount of reach between the base and the lamp head, so I can put the base near the perimiter while having the light source above the center of my fairly large desk.
The Z-Bar has worked out well. I'm using the clamp-on base, which doesn't take up any desk space. However, the included round base is flat (it's about 3/8" thick), so it wouldn't really reduce desk space either, since papers can be laid on top of it. The lamp is well made and doesn't feel flimsy at all (as one might think from the photos and the general design). It's about as low profile as possible. It puts out a lot of light and the light quality is excellent. I got the "daylight" version and the light isn't blueish at all. The light is similar to that output by "full spectrum" cf bulbs. It's also nice not to have the heat of the halogen lamp that I was using previously.
My one suggestion would be to place the on/off/dimmer switches on the light bar, rather than at the base of the lamp. My lamp is mounted at the rear edge of my desk and it's a hassle to have to stand up and reach back there to adjust or turn the lamp on or off. A second issue is that while the light directly under the leds is nice and white, light towards the edges of the illuminated area has a yellow hue (due to refraction issues from using 6 leds spaced apart). Not a huge deal, but it does detract from an otherwise great lamp. If these two issues were resolved, I'd have given it 5 stars instead of 4. The "six shadow" issue mentioned in other reviews doesn't bother me.
I was initially hesitant to spend this much on a desk lamp, but after looking at the alternatives with similar features, this is actually reasonably priced. It won't need replacement bulbs for years and uses less energy than halogen. I also justified the purchase by telling myself that improving my workspace will make me more productive. Looking at it this way, the lamp will pay for itself!
Lets hope it holds up over time. Another led lamp I own (not made by Koncept) has developed an intermittent contact somewhere in the circuitry over time, which results in flickering and having to fiddle with it to keep it lit. There are a few comments here describing a similar problem developing with the Z-Bar. Hopefully these are the exception.
I've been using this lamp daily for over 4 years and it's worked flawlessly. Not a single problem. In light of this, I raised my review from 4 to 5 stars. I'm now looking for another "extendable" lamp for my bedroom and might actually get another one of these, since I haven't seen anything else with as much reach.
