From an Army Vet,
This review is from: GI Sleeping Pad
Don't buy it unless you like torturing yourself. It's not good for sleeping on and it's terrible for exercise because it rolls up on itself. Used it for 3 months in basic training, would never use one again.

It can't roll up on you once you're sleeping on it; and it isn't designed to make you comfy if you've put your bag down on bad ground: It's designed to insulate and to keep your sleeping bag dry.

He said it was bad for exercising on because it rolls up on itself. Being an Army vet myself, I can confirm that the roll up military pads are a bit of a PITA to use for PT. As for sleeping comfort, you're right: The pad's designed to insulate you from the ground, not be comfortable.
