This review is from: The Treasures of Mystery Island: The Ghost Ship [Download] (Software Download)
Long ago an elegant cruise ship named the Queen Margaret was hit by a tsunami type wave which deluged the ship and buried all aboard in a huge wall of surging sea. The stricken ship became a prison for shipwrecked souls who could not escape. The ship, without a live person on board and submerged at the bottom of the sea, is attached forever to a tropical island nearby.
As a reporter you visit the Santa Rossa island when weird rumors of ghosts and deaths abound and you are to investigate the phenomena. A good friend, Jane, who would be your guide, went ahead of you, but she too has disappeared.
The artwork in this intriguing and beautiful game is top notch, the story is great, but prepare for the most diabolically hidden objects ever. The items to be found appear whole at the bottom of your screen, but they are divided into teeny weeny pieces and you're going to need eyes like a hawk to find them. The hint mechanism, however is very forgiving!
You are going to be kept very busy trying to solve the mysteries, gathering items to help you and utilizing them in the right manner. You learn that a wicked shaman was responsible for the huge wave that engulfed the ship and is waiting for his chance to send another one to destroy the island. Ghosts from the ship materialize as you go, warning you that the shaman will strike at the eclipse of the moon and the countdown begins, you have to hurry, hurry! You save each ghost by finding an artifact particular to him such as an artist's palette or a violin for a musician, a spyglass for a sailor. When the ghost is "saved" he becomes a little wooden doll which you place in the proper room of a model ship. We are reminded of Alawar's "Stray Souls: A Dollhouse Story".
As you tramp around as fast as you can, checking out a wide variety of scenes, all beautifully rendered, you will discover journals, letters, posters, notes scattered over the entire island and reading them adds depth to the game. You have your hands full here! As usual in a HOG game you are a world class mechanic and handyman. The mini-games are not hard but they're entertaining enough. Throughout the game you'll be carrying on in a way that could be called frenetic. You've got to stop the shaman and his black magic and find your lost buddy. The game is immensely complex and detailed and it's a wonder the producers were able to coordinate it, but they did! Don't miss this one!
