5.0 out of 5 stars All Hail SHOUT FACTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, January 22, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XVII (The Crawling Eye / The Beatniks / The Final Sacrifice / Blood Waters of Dr. Z) (DVD)
Just wanted to say Shout Factory has done an AMAZING JOB. Each one of their MST3K sets has had an outstanding mix from various MST eras and it seems as though the ratio of great to mediocre episodes is MUCH better than with that ***other*** company. And they seem to be coming out with regularity-- every 90 days or so, it seems.

Well you see, Rhino was doing a terrible job about it. Two sets a year with barely an extra in them. Shout has already released 4 in just their first year alone. This will make 5 in just over a year. I agree with JennMars.

Not to mention with loads more extras.

Rhino released 12 box's containing 4 episodes apiece(or 3 with shorts) plus all the single disc's-let's see, what's that, something like 60 episodes and I'm supposed to declare that a "terrible job"??? 2 sets a year-oh! that was just SO terrible!! and BARELY any extras! oh PLEASE let me find a giant bonfire somewhere so I can chuck all those HORRIBLE Rhino sets into the burning flames because, um, I really can't put up with such shoddy production!

Jesus Christ! Did I touch a nerve? Lighten up! Yes, I'm glad RHINO was releasing them, but at the rate they were doing it, it would take 20 more years to release all the episodes! I would call that a terrible job! It's already taken them more than 15 years to get THIS far. In the beginning('95 or so), they were releasing them one episode AT A TIME on tapes, stopped, then they re-released them again on DVD, and THAT all took several years itself. THEN in 2002 they started with the 4 DVD sets at 2 a year and they only released 12 of those. So, over the course of 15 years, they've only released about 60 episodes. There are about 175(not including the KTMA eps.). You tell me if that's a good job.

I look at it this way-Rhino started the ball rolling. No one else did. That is why they didn't do a 'terrible!' job. And it makes sense that they started offering them one AT A TIME because at that point they did not know how well or even if they were going to sell. They were taking a chance. Then when they saw that they indeed DID sell they upped their production to the box sets. Nothing very perplexing about that. And the reason they only put out 2 sets a year HAS to be because they didn't sell out! Why should they release 3, 4 or 5 sets a year if the 2 they DID put out are sitting on the shelves? You have to take a moment and consider things from THEIR angle, not just what YOUR fondest desires would be.

Well, if you ask me, I think they were doing it just to be as cheap as possible and make it last as long as they possibly could. ...Wait a minute, you work for them don't you?! And besides, like I said, it should not at all take 15-20 years to release ten seasons of a show. That's just WAY too damn long. It shouldn't take ANYONE that long to release ANYTHING. I've been waiting for over 15 years to see episodes I've never seen at all. You can pretty much find any obscure show you can think of on DVD now. After all, Paramount released that crappy Star Trek show that lasted only 3 seasons back in the 60's on DVD didn't they?

If Rhino was worried about the sets not selling well, why did they do it for 7 years, then? They were clearly selling, so why did they not step it up after a while? After all, Shout!'s stepping it up and they've only been doing it for a year. Besides, releasing 2 sets a year, it would take almost 22 years to do it all!

As for Rhino getting the ball rolling, that's just who the people at Best Brains happened to pick to strike a deal with to release them. It could have just as well been anyone. If Rhino was doing a good job, then why did someone else take over and so far is doing a much better job? Some people have been waiting a very long time to get the whole show. It's not just me, it's everyone who likes the show and hasn't seen every episode!

I'm grateful for what Rhino put out, MST3K-wise and that's the bottom line.

I think most could agree that Rhino deserves some degree of gratitude for getting this material out there when all there really was for years were the DAP versions.

That said, Shout Factory really upped the ante with the frequency, extras and most importantly the pricepoint. This and the last set (XVI) really snuck up on me and I just ordered both today. I can't wait to get the Tom Servo to go with my Crow figurine.

I think Rhino did a great job. I think Shout Factory is is doing an even better job, so far.
