Best system for which to buy the game but what could have been...,
This review is from: Batman: Arkham Origins (Video Game)
After Arkham City: Armored Edition, I had very high hopes for this game. In AC, great use was made of the Wii U game pad. The map was always up, you could select locations, control your weapons, and in they even integrated it into the game such that Batman had a touch pad on his forearm. When you through a remote controlled batarang, you directed it using the pad.
This time, the developer seemed to get lazy. The only benefit of the game pad was to have an always on map, which was great but in light of what I expected, quite a disappointment. The game is really good but I am reviewing it as how it was presented on the Wii U and considering that they did not make use of the game pad, I was disappointed.
The game pad is really an amazing gaming device. I understand why third parties do not like it though. For the PS and Xbox, it is the exact same game being produced, just for different systems. To make a great Wii U game requires more effort and changes to the game which they do not seem to be willing to make which is a shame. I am looking forward to Watchdogs for the Wii U as the game with all the hacking and the main character always using a smart tablet/phone to hack seems made for the Wii U but we will have to wait and see. My review does not take into account that the Wii U version offers no online play (as I believe is offered in the other two systems) but as I knew this going in, it would be wrong to ding it for that.
If you have another system, I would still purchase it for the Wii U over either the PS or Xbox. Simply having an always on map makes it much better but comparing to what could have and what should have been, it is disappointing. Even if the map had some functionality, I would have been greatly pleased but instead, you just get a static map. If you want to set a way point, you still have to do it through the controller menu which is silly when I should have been able to just touch the location on my map to set it.
