Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Welcome to the quaint town of Hemlock. A place where you can really put your feet up and relax....that is, of course, if you consider a town where a werewolf is currently going on a murdering rampage cozy.

A lupine virus has been sweeping the nation, turning anyone who has been scratched or bit into a werewolf. People are naturally frightened, but life goes on as it does for Mackenzie, a normal teenage high school student who is just starting her senior year, which is supposed to be the best time of her life. Unfortunately for Mac, she feels like her life is falling apart. Her best friend, Amy, was brutally murdered by a werewolf, and Mac is still reeling from the loss. It would help if her two other best friends, Jason, who was Amy's boyfriend, and Kyle would stop pulling away, and just talk to her. But Jason's tendency for getting slap drunk, getting into fights, and for never being there when she needs him has Mac on the verge of strangling him herself. Kyle on the other hand, is still a great friend, but Mac knows he is hiding something as well. And then Mac's life suddenly goes from really bad to horror bound. With the series of werewolf murders in town, the senator, who is Amy's grandfather, let's a group known as "Trackers" enter, and pretty much have control over the town. These trackers, as their name implies, track down any person who might have contracted the lupine virus, and send them off to a camp where many don't survive. Mac is disgusted by the trackers, and their violent ways, but she's even more horrified when she realizes Jason wants to join their ranks. It's then that Mac realizes the only way to save her friends is to find out for herself who killed Amy. But little does she realize the extent that some people will go to keep secrets, and that the truth, when it becomes known, is not an easy pill to swallow. With danger at every corner, a werewolf in bloodlust on the loose, trying to keep Jason and Kyle out of harm's way, and a crazy tracker leader thrown in the mix that'd rather see her dead than alive, and Mac just might have more on her plate than she can handle.

Hemlock started off with such a gasp worthy bang that held me captive to such an extent that I ended up gobbling this book in less than a few hours. It was that freakin' good! Mac, Jason, Kyle, and the other characters were all written superbly, to where I really felt for them, and the trials they faced. Mac wasn't a silly heroine who charges into danger with no thought to the consequences, but yet, she was exceptionally strong and a determined individual who only wanted to see those she loved safe. Everything she did was for a reason. The only time I would possibly think she was out of her ever lovin' mind was towards the end when she didn't come clean with her friend as to who the possible suspect was. Personally, I would want backup. Just saying. But, again, all the characters actions were totally believable, which made the story even better. The plot was actually very cool. A lupine virus that is spreading across the world, an evil, slightly deranged group of people intent on taking every lupine down, three friends full of tension and secrets, and then to top it off there is a huge mystery surrounding Amy's death. Also, another of my fav moments is when Mac is having her nightmares about Amy. I realize that sounds insane, but believe me when I say it was totally freaky, gave me shivers, and was like the icing on a cake. Amy's "visits" in Mac's dreams were the things of slight insanity, darkness, and utter riddles. It was like having the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland dancing in your brain, while muttering enigmas. I will say I did kind of realize where it was going pretty early on, but that didn't stop Hemlock from sucking me in! This is one book that you won't want to miss!!!
