I found this book on the laundry room bookshelf last night. It's going back this morning. It's this sort of dreck that is putting me off reading. These "franchised" characters are so formulaic and Pavlovian. Always a "damaged" veteran of war, some super-secret government agency (hint! hint!), or some inner-city police force. And ALWAYS A BAD-ASS!. Somehow, in their "tragic" past, they had time to study any and all forms of martial arts, survival skills, weaponry and philosophy. This silly bit of business avoids all attempts at allegory and just goes directly to two towns named HOPE and DESPAIR. And wouldn't you just know it? They are right next to each other! Every one in HOPE is nice and helpful and has no qualms about a 6'2", 250 pound drifter hanging around town wearing a janitor's clothes and buying trash bags at odd hours of the night. Least of all the beautiful female police officer, who does everything but purr and rub against his leg, 2 minutes after meeting him at the city limits. It was not long after this unlikely "plot twist" that this book was launched across the room. I absolutely KNEW how this book was going to end, having read too much of this drivel in the past. If this is what passes for a "best-seller" these days perhaps we need to raise the bar a little.
