4.0 out of 5 stars Fun album, but production doesn't do the band justice, November 12, 2005
This review is from: Thunder, Lightning, Strike (Audio CD)
I saw The Go! Team live prior to hearing the entire album and was completely blown away by their performance. Some bands (like X) are forever doomed (or blessed, depending on how often you go to shows) to sound detectably inferior on record than they do live. If the Go! Team played in my city every month, I'd be in hog heaven! The album Thunder, Lightning, Strike is merely the menu to a meal only served live. And I am not just saying that because I caught them on a good night! Some bands can work the medium of the record very well and then put on a quality live show that stands on different legs. Balancing them both is something many bands and fans take for granted. On album, the Go! Team's songs have a slightly muffled or lower-fi feel, like they are playing in someone elses room across the hall. Honestly it's like listening to their demo and I don't know if this was due to a small budget or if this was a deliberate aesthetic decision on the band's part. That level of production is fine for some bands, but not Go! Team. I can tell you that the live versions of these songs in a mid-sized venue will blow your pants far into oblivion. "Huddle Formation" is one of my personal favorite songs and live the song packs a very powerful punch, while the album version just doesn't fully live up to its potental (though it's still quite good). I hope next time around they go for a slightly crisper production. It would better suit them. Their songs are too damn good to keep so muffled down.
