This review is from: The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy (Hardcover)
I am a history junkie and I've read several biographies of Joseph P. Kennedy. This is by far the best. It is a warts and all depiction that portrays his naked ambition, infidelity and epically bad service as U.S.Smbassador to the Court of St. James. At the same time, he was a devoted father, took care of his children when they were sick and their mother was shopping, and tried to prepare them to fulfill his ambitions. It's hard to reconcile the two sides of this complex personality:cruel and unfaithful to his wife, disloyal, controlling and self-promoting in his professional life, and a loving father who was wildly supportive of his near-delinquent offspring. This book is long but very well written and provides new information and insight on the life of this man, even as well--documented as it has been. I recommend it highly.

David S. Levine says:
Joseph Patrick Kennedy was an especially evil man. He was a Nazi enabler and dishonorable in both his public and business lives. Given the great talent he received from God it's especially distressing to have to write the foregoing, but we're all bound by honor to tell the truth.

And what is also distressing is that the author himself commits that the old canard (probably without realizing it), making it sound as though it was the Jews that made Kennedy an anti-semite. On returning to America, where he was increasingly criticized as an appeaser and a traitor to the Roosevelt cause, Mr. Nasaw writes, "Kennedy's paranoia about Jewish influence" accelerated: "The Jews opposed him and orchestrated the attacks on him, he convinced himself, because he was committed to finding a way to live at peace with Hitler, while they were committed to going to war." You see, if only the war-mongering Jews had left him alone he never would have been such a Jew hater!

Indeed, the Jews went after him after trying to broker peace or at least have peace talks between the Nazi regime and other Western nations. He wanted to avoid a war and at that period world jewry had boycotted German goods and pretty much declared war on Germany - so to them Kennedy was an enemy. It doesn't help that he was catholic either.
A good book to read is "The Transfer Agreement" by Edwin Black, it goes further into the little unknown war between Jewish organizations and the Nazis.

Graham M. Flower says:
my favorite quote about Joe Kennedy is one from a British politician who said "I thought daffodils were yellow until I met Joe Kennedy". He said this partly because Kennedy would stay way out in the countryside and commute in a long way because of fear of being bombed. This of course refers to the period that Joe was the ambassador to Britain.

Michael T Kennedy says:
After the anti-Jewish laws passed by Hitler, it is a wonder that you can write "world jewry had boycotted German goods and pretty much declared war on Germany ." One reason so many Jews had ignored warnings was that they were German patriots and had served in the army in WWI. You say more about yourself than about German Jews.
