This review is from: Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter: A Novel (Kindle Edition)
This author manages to keep a reader in suspense throughout a lengthy journey through present and past in the deepest, poorest South, as he tells a tale of two wounded souls brushing against each other. I found his descriptions as true as can be, his dialogue ditto, and his story compelling. Empathy for each of his characters is impossible to avoid. The novel reads a bit like the best of Dickens--humane, funny in spots, and showing sympathy for the deprived humanity under the microscope. Six stars, and a hearty recommendation. "Write what you know," goes the creative writing mantra. Mr. Franklin has greatly met that standard. And no wasted words.
