This review is from: The Rough Guide to Florida 8 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
I recently took a four-day trip to south Florida using this book as my guide. I'm typically a Lonely Planet person, but I thought I'd try the competition, since I feel like LP is spreading itself a bit thin. The Rough Guide certainly got the job done, but I frequently felt the guide was not all it could be. Don't be mistaken--the recommendations in the book are solid, and I was very happy with almost all of them. For example, the guide led me to stay in an unexpectedly affordable hip and funky hotel in south beach Miami that I would otherwise never have considered. Inexplicably, however, the book omits all mention of the incredible Everglades hostel in Homestead, which has been there since 1997. The maps in the book are passable, but really could be improved--more of them, larger size, higher contrast, etc. For example, why not include a detailed map of the everglades, or a diagram of the Tri-Rail train routes? The Rough Guide lived up to its name-it provides a very good rough guide with solid recommendations, but is not as complete as I would like.
