The words and phrases listed in this book are good ones. The problem is that the author doesn't include tones with the pinyin. I know that this book is for total beginners and tourists, but still, tones should be included, as they are a basic and important part of the language. Since tones are difficult to describe in print, the author just point people to a YouTube video that explains and gives examples of the tones.

Ok, thanks for the comment - I have now included a section on tones along with the Chinese tone markings, although learning the tones is not a necessity for basic understanding and conversation. I never learned the tones while I lived in China, but was still well understood, but I basically do see where you are coming from, and appreciate your thoughts - I have now had a native speaker assist me in adding the tone markings to the book for those of you who would like to cover them.
