This review is from: Geronimo (The Lamar Series in Western History) (Hardcover)
Thank you, Mr. Utley. I have learned from the book: "GEROMINO" many facts. Most of what I learned provided clarity for the events depicted in the narrative. It is exciting to use GE to zoom in onto the locations such as Ft. Apache & Fort Bowie.I have traveled the same trails as the people in this book, mostly via interstate highway and had no clue of "Steens Pass" when I passed through Steins, N.M. I can't wait to visit the locations - except for Mexico - and not in high summer.
It took some figuring to determine the meaning of the symbols in the maps. Thanks again for all of them - it would be so nice if other authors would help the reader with these visuals. While not an apologist for either side in the Indian Wars, I would like to have been able to read more about the "depredations" of the Native Americans in this text. The horrible torture and killings of Whites and others would open up more knowledge of the era. Too many folks equate the attacks by soldiers and others in this war as justification for those depredations. I can imagine the fate of innocent white settlers when murdered. How sad that they are continually shortchanged in texts & film. I think that the beginning scenes of the 1957 movie THE SEARCHERS adequately describe that horror.
