So true to the Book,
This review is from: Great Expectations Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
I had just finished reading "Great Expectations" and was looking for a movie or series to watch based on the book. So often these movies or TV series are just so off the mark. This BBC mini-series was not, in my opinion. I was not the least bit disappointed. After reading the reviews I was afraid I would be, since one reviewer really panned it, by saying the directors, etc... Must not have read the book, he/she thought the characterizations of all the main characters were all wrong. I strongly disagree. I got the impression reading the book that Pip was very embarrassed and ashamed of Joe in the presence of his class superiors (in fact, Pip himself suffered much guilt later on in life because of it). The sister of Pip was very inhuman in her attitude and treatment of Pip, Joe and most other characters in the book. Miss Havisham was an extremely eccentric, cold and hard-hearted woman of great wealth and superiority. And poor Joe was certainly not portrayed as being very intelligent or articulate in either the book or the film/series. I guess it just proves that we all interpret what we read differently.
So, please don't be put off by the negative reviews, at least not until you've read the positive ones. True, Biddy's character was left out of the film entirely but that really had no impact on the story. I did have to read my husband the very last few pages of the book, though, because the end of the film, while ending as settled as the book, led you to suspect a different ending from the book.
This series only consist of three episodes. Just an FYI, sine I was having trouble figuring out the huge price discrepancy. It is simply more expensive if you order the DVD rather than watch it immediately via Amazon.com.
