Welcome back Mariah...and R&B!,
This review is from: Me. I Am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse (Audio CD)
IMO, this is Mariah's best effort since Daydream or Butterfly. While there are no stand out songs with a mesmerizing chorus and tempo that will probably rocket to #1, the album is exceptional when appreciated as a full body of work. It has a 90s feel that leaves you craving more true R&B music unlike that which exists today (Disney pop). Just think about the state of todays music. Who would think to collaborate with Stevie Wonder on the harmonica? Mariah spectacularly pulls of an uptempo soulful masterpiece on"Make it Look Good." Then there's Meteorite-a total throwback to the era of disco balls and Studio 54. I LOVE it, it's almost hypnotic! And although Carey's voice is sometimes a bit strained when compared to her music circa 90-97, it's still strong enough to touch your soul, at times sending chills up your spine (e.g.Heaven). And who doesn't love an MC/rap collaboration. Nobody does the Hip Hop/R&B duo better than Mimi. My personal favorite is Dedicated feat. Nas, a feel-good laid back track you'll immediately fall in love with, especially if you're a fan of classic 90s R&B.
