Beware, loud, slow and not XP friendly!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ASUS USB 2.0 8xDVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U (Black) (Personal Computers)
I bought this for my laptop running XP, i wanted a good dvd burner and my current drive is only a cdR/dvd player combo. I figured the reviews for this seemed very positive. I guess the majority of people reviewing this are using asus netbooks with win7 or something.
When i load this up, windows installs the drivers fine but fails to recognize that it is a dvd recorder. Even tho under system it shows the name of the drive correctly and in properties even identifies it as a dvdr, in My Computer it calls it just shows up as CD Drive (sometimes, other times it says DVD-RAM...what the heck..). Windows wont allow you to write to it via sendto menu, drag and drop or the writable folder. I installed their cyberlink software, but that wouldn't even let me select the drive for recording. It will show the info for the drive and even say it is a writer but i cant choose it. I've come to the conclusion that the bundled software is just a pretty wrapper for the windows burning utility. It will play dvds with player however, the only reason i gave it more than 1 star.
When i contacted Asus, they told me use another PC or return it. I'm willing to bet they wanted me to make that PC an ASUS netbook.
So, not wanting to deal with the hassle and expense of returning this, i tried some real burning software from third parties. YAY! they could detect the drive and allow me to burn with it. Sorta. Burning was ok, but slow. And not just the writing process, the actual reading and scanning of disks is bad too. The thing sounds like a robot in a machine factory, making a chugging noise and reading, then pausing, then chugging and reading, and so forth. This makes for a very slow process, with bursts of reading data instead of a steady stream. My other old drive did this too. I was hoping for a swift, quiet drive.
I'm gonna try an exchange, but man i hate to do it. I purchased from BUY DOT COM thru amazon, i hope their willing to work with me. I get the feeling ill be screwed though.
Update: I returned this and they were very courteous. I used the money to by a a different brand (samsung i think) and its worked flawlessly.
