5.0 out of 5 stars Eerily Superb Tile That is Criminally Overlooked, December 30, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Metro 2033 - PC (Video Game)
First of let me say that I new of this game before I purchased it. I knew the game was extremely engrossing even before playing it, so when I finally got to play it myself it came as no surprise that I had a blast doing so. In an industry where copy and paste run on the mill FPS titles like Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty dominate, small titles like this that actually bring new elements to the table get overlooked criminally. I would also like to say that this game is not at all short, it lasts well into the 10-hour range. Yes that is twice as long as COD and more than 3 times as long as BF3's horrid single player. Weapons are unreliable and the combination of frightening encounters with monsters in dark tunnels while trying to keep your flashlight battery charged make this game eerie and extremely enjoyable.

For those who are not to sure what kind of game this is I will say that it is an extremely realistic action/horror shooter. It is NOT an Open world game, it is a linear FPS. HOWEVER it has multiple paths that lead to dead ends that are littered with ammo to scavenge and other survival tools. These are extremely useful since ammo is worth its weight in gold..literally. Military grade ammo is used as currency in the game's many metro vendors. The developers did everything possible to make the game world believable and dangerous. Some elements in the game are so uniquely detailed that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. For example; your gas-mask is not unlimited nor is it indestructible. Since the game takes place during a nuclear fallout the air is poisonous. Your gas-mask uses filters to clean the air that you breathe, but the filters must be replaced once in a while lest you suffocate. If you get into a fight while wearing the mask, it may break and you could suffocate also. This is why it is extremely important that you scavenge the area for spare filters and masks. The games weapons are also unique, with the exception of a very dirty and worn AK-47, all the weapons are home-made and believably unreliable. It is these little details that make the world of Metro 2033 seem so real.

I also mentioned that this is a horror title as well. While the game will show you early on that you will be fighting monsters, it isn't until you actually encounter them in the dark metro tunnels that it is clear how scary they really are. A combination of excellent sound design and narrow corridors will have you on edge the entire trip through the metro. The sounds are so well done that a single growl from deep within the black tunnel will give you goosebumps and have you struggling to reload your trashy weapons and recharging your flashlight batteries with the handmade charger. You will feel a sense of dread whenever you enter the tunnels and a wave of relieve when moving out and into civilization once more.

The graphics in this game are also top-notch granted you have a computer that can run it. The game engine will eat your computer alive if you cant handle it. But if you can you will be rewarded with a rich experience unlike that of any other game before it. The environments are richly detailed that you will have to see to believe.

The bottom line: This game is a superb title that is criminally overlooked. Its high-end graphics and extremely eerie sound design will have you on edge. It also has a Stalker-like feel to it when sneaking around enemy encampments. Its unreliable weapons and equipment will have you scrambling to keep your gear in order before heading into the Metro Tunnels. If you are on the fence about this game and are undecided between this and some other military shooter. Get this game. Metro 2033 is a unique and enthralling experience you will not soon forget.

note: IGN gave this game a 6.9/10 IGN-ORE that review. The team who did that must have been crazy, this title is at least an 8/10. And since the developers patched and removed most of the launch bugs, it is closer to a 9.5/10.
