This Nikon P510 puts my D80 with my 20-300mm lense to shame!!,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Great camera. I just took photos of my kid's concert and I never could get close enough to take pictures like these. The digital zoom is outstanding and had no problem zooming in to view my child from a far distance away. Video mode also worked well from a distance. This camera is well worth its price. I paid over $2000.00 for my D80 and sigma lens a few years ago. Nikon's got a real winner of a product on its hands. I hope the quality of this camera is like my D80 which is top notch. For me to get the same zoom, I would have to spend a few thousand on a new lens for my D80 and then switch the lens (pain in the rear when traveling or on the go which is usually the case for me) in order to get close to the P510's 42x optical and digital zoom. Outstanding overall.

Well? Was it? You took the photos of your kids' concert and mentioned you could never get this close before but you did not follow up and let us know how the final photos/videos compared to the D80.

My apologies for not responding sooner. The camera is simply outstanding. Battery life has lasted for months on a single charge when not in use. When taking photos, the camera's battery lasts for a few days. Video quality is excellent especially in HD. Playback is perfect. Camera shots are perfect of the kids viewing later on my computer. The camera's zoom is as good as my 300-500mm sigma lense with a 2x teleconverter hypersonic which tells you that this camera's autofocus and zoom as superb. The picture quality is as good as my D80 in my opinion. If you put my D80 photos next to my P510 photos and tried to determine which camera took the photos, you would not be able to tell the difference assuming one is not a pro (I am not obviously a pro). This is a great traveling camera. I took photos from the Staten Island Ferry in NY and could see the Freedom towers and Statue of Liberty so close up and clear it is breathtaking. At my kids' concerts I can sit in the back of a huge auditorium and zoom right into my kids' faces quickly and get great focused shots. The auto-focus makes it easy to snap photos. I have not determined if I can increase the shutter speed and/or picture taking speed. My D80 has a setting that allows me to take shots very fast for moving targets, sports of the kids, etc. The shutter speed is ok on P510 but I have not determined if I can make it faster which comes in handy when the kids or subject matter are on the go. I suspect it might be fixed considering it is a point and shoot. I would not hesitate to buy this camera if you are considering it. If Nikon improved one thing on this camera, it would be to increase the shutter speed like the D80 if the feature does not exist or if the feature does exist, make it more user friendly. I hope this helps anyone considering this camera.

Scott, it's optical zoom, not digital zoom. Digital zoom is widely considered useless, the 42 x optical zoom is its USP
