5.0 out of 5 stars " God of War Ascension is Spectacular! ", March 12, 2013
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PS3 God of War: Ascension (Video Game)
" God of war Ascension is another great masterpiece that I can gladly accept in the God of war Saga. This game explains Kratos hatred and anger towards the Gods he destroyed in God of war III! And also gives you backstory to his Human side before he became the God of war. God of war games were never so much for story and emotional momments asside from the epicness the series is known for, But I can see why Santa Monica made this game to give more of a Human element to Kratos to make us the players sympathize with his anger and reason why he became a monster! For all the God of war fans out there or just anyone that appreciates a great action game with amazing graphics , Music epic battles and just badass momments that will make your jaw litterly drop to floor then this game is for you!! Words cannot describe how amazing this game is! To sum it up God of war Ascension is the reason you own must own a PS3 and be proud to show off the abilites of the Last breath of the PS3 hardwares life! BUY IT!!!"

What's the gameplay like? I've never played a God of War game...

It's an action game similar to Devil May Cry, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and modern Ninja Gaiden -- the attacks center around light/heavy attacks usually in conjunction with grabs/parries/projectiles to create combo strings (the better the combo, the greater the reward in the form of experience points or currency). If you enjoy brutal, hack n' slash game play with grandiose, epic themes, God of War is an easy recommendation.

I recently played a little bit of the new Metal Gear Solid Revengeance demo. I'm not sure I was playing the game correctly as it seemed to be mostly button mashing to me. I think the games that emphasize "combos" leave me a little confused. As I'm aware, the new Metal Gear game is also a hack n slash type game. Perhaps these games aren't for me. I seem to be at home with shooters like Resistance 3. Lol.

To each his own. I would recommend you try the first GoW if you're really curious. The combat is hack n' slash, but it's not completely button mashy. For instance, certain enemy weaknesses can only be exploited with specific attacks. It's not incredibly deep but I had fun with the combat nonetheless, trying to be as fancy as I could get away with, etc. The finishing kills are extremely entertaining. Aside from that, the story is pretty good for a video game, the size and scope is impressive if you like sprawling epics, and the music is pretty awesome. There are also some light puzzle solving elements, not incredibly challenging, but they break up the action in all the right places. Like I said, if you are able to, give God of War 1 a shot if you're interested. I think it's on PSN.

When I say "button mashing" I mean that I'm pressing the attack button repeatedly but don't know the combos or how to execute them. Games nowadays don't really come with instruction manuals or anything explaining the game. It kinda sucks.

I'll look up GoW 1. I tend to like updated graphics so I usually don't play older games but maybe it's worth a look. A PSN friend mentioned Ascension so that's why I wanted to take a look at it. I don't think a demo exists for it...
