This review is from: Magic Slays (Kate Daniels) (Mass Market Paperback)
Usually by book five or six of a series, I begin to get series fatigue and lose interest in the characters- not so with this one!
Every time these books come out I cannot wait to read them. I love everything about them, the tight writing, the amazing characters, the world-building... the Atlanta in the book is so real and incredibly fleshed out I almost believe I could drive up there and see the Honeycomb Gap, Unicorn Lane, Saiman's apartment building and the People's Casino. The author has a way of immersing you into the lives of the people between the pages that is wonderful.
This book does have a more introspective and emotional feel than previous installments. Kate is given some world-shaking secrets about her childhood that leave her (more so than usual) feeling emotionally unsure about her current relationships. The Kate in this book is a bit more focused, less pushed about by circumstance. She can't just go in and beat people up anymore whenever she wants to get answers, she has to use her knowledge of magic and her investigative skills to get what she wants. Like Ghastek says in one scene "I liked you better as a mercenary." Kate replies "yeah, so did I."
There is a thread of humor throughout the book, such as Kate's bantering with Andrea and the bickering Russian witch family, that breaks up the impending doom nicely.
All in all, an amazing book that was well worth the wait from the last. Now I just have to contain myself until the next installment :P
