Ripley's cartoons and his "Believe it or Not" articles were always mild amusement to me but I never knew the extent Robert went to for fame -- learning a lot of dirt on this guy has not diminished that amusement.
The author goes overboard I think in telling us all the dirt on Robert: his loves, his cheating and boozing, and not giving credit to people who did most of the research for his cartoons. It was gratifying that he was born and raised in my area in Santa Rosa (just north of San Francisco).
The description of his trips through China and South America were interesting, sometimes daring and a bit off-putting.
I did enjoy how the current history of the times greatly influenced his writing, but this is certainly not a historical novel.
If you have ever wondered about Ripley's life, be prepared to be disillusioned. But you'll still love his cartoons.
