Much More Than a Guidebook,
This review is from: The Lost Tiki Palaces of Detroit (Made in Michigan Writers Series) (Paperback)
After reading the title story in another collection (Detroit Noir (Akashic Noir)) - as well as the author's two novels (Second Hand and Leisure Seeker, The: A Novel) - I couldn't wait to read more of Zadoorian's stories in this new book. I was not disappointed.
The stories are not only set in Detroit, they are about Detroit - in very real ways that go far beyond any guidebook-like descriptions. He knows his town, that's for sure. But it's much more than that. These stories are about what all good stories are about: being human. So you need not be from Detroit to enjoy this collection. You just need to be... well, human.
Zadoorian gets inside the heads of quite an assortment of narrators, and develops the other characters with well-honed observation skills. You know he's been there in some way, but you sometimes wonder how that could be. Did he actually...? The stories ring true, but that doesn't mean there are no surprises. And touching, sad, and funny moments. Best of all, this book is an entertaining read.
