1.0 out of 5 stars product misleading, December 11, 2011
I bought this rotating iron because:
- it was supposed to add shine and volume at the root. There is some truth to this save for the fact that the rotating iron burns your scalp and forehead if you try to get it anywhere near your roots. It does come with a "thermal shield" to protect you from this but the shield only protects one small <1" area on top of the rotator... which if you are straightening/ lifting your roots, it is the side of the rotator that burns you.
- the box says it "styles in 1/2 the time!" It does not do this at all. I generally blow dry my curly, course hair with a straightening brush and then use a ceramic flat iron to smooth and add shine... if you are trying to get to your roots, this takes much more time to do with the Instyler and the *shine results are less with it than with a ceramic flat iron.*
- it said "410 degrees F ceramic heat." This lead me to think it was ceramic coated (which is much safer and less damaging to your hair... giving you less breakage and split ends.) That was a foolish assumption on my part. The rotating barrel is not ceramic coated. I actually looked everywhere in the instructions, on the box, and even searched the internet to find out what the barrel was comprised of... no success. Although, I do hope that after I write this, the facts will come forward.
- it was expensive! I always think that if something is expensive, it is well made and will last long. This is not the case with the product here. In fact, reading a lot of these reviews, I found that you are lucky if it lasts more than a year. My hair stylist recommended that I go to a beauty supply store or look into buying a ceramic Chi flat iron online. She said to make sure the iron is ceramic. I have looked at reviews on this Chi flat iron, which can be found around the same price, and read much better customer reviews. Some customers even say that their Chi iron lasted them 6+ years. This may be my next purchase.

Hi there,

Thanks for this review. I was THIS close to purchasing this product until I found out a MAJOR deal breaker. I simply clicked the "Chat with Us" link on the InStyler website and asked a representative exactly what the rotating barrel was made of. Wouldn't you know it, ALUMINUM (at least they were honest), just about the crappiest type of metal you could use on your hair. Just thought I'd let you know!
