One of my top 20 books of all time,
This review is from: Random Family: Love, Drugs, Trouble, and Coming of Age in the Bronx (Paperback)
I read Random Family three years ago and the intensity of emotion and vivid memory of the characters has stayed with me in a very strong and visceral way. Adrian LeBlanc has a way of bringing to life the people whose lives she chronicles here and clearly gets to know quite intimately. I found myself getting very attached to the characters, particularly Coco and her children, as the second half of the book unfolded...I have been periodically looking to see if she has written any other books since Random Family. Even through the despair and hard times we witness these everyday people going through, we sense a wonder of life and living that is at the core human and universal. Having worked with youth in urban areas over the past twenty years, I highly recommend this book for teachers, after school program staff and anyone whose lives have been touched by young people.
