4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but lack of key accessories frustrating, June 24, 2009
This review is from: Garmin nuvi 1300 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Discontinued by Manufacturer) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I agree with the previous reviewer: it is way cheap that Garmin doesn't include a USB cable with the unit. However, mine came with instructions (and was very easy to set up, much easier than my previous Garmin, a nuvi 360) and found my current location quickly and accurately.

There are a few notable improvements I've found so far as compared to the Garmin 360--(1) the touch screen is much more responsive and accurate (2) there seem to be more POI (though, of course, there are still locations that are not listed) (3) there are lots of extra features like the ecoroute thing, which allows you to track your gas mileage and the cost of driving from 1 location to another.

As far as the negatives, the lack of accessories is the biggest problem. Ironically, if you want to register your product to get a 10% discount on accessories, you have to have the USB cord accessory so that their website can recognize your nuvi. This is not going to bode well for the number of people who will register their Nuvi 1300s, and I assume Garmin will come up with some solution to this in the future (i.e.--a way to register without connecting the nuvi to your computer). When I called Garmin, they promised to send me a USB cord for free, so that might be something to try.

Overall, great GPS with a few small problems.

I have a new Garmin 255w (slightly thicker). I hear that the 1200/1300 series have a better speaker system in it. However, I have not been able to find a 1200/1300 in my local store yet.
**I would like to know if you can set the GPS volume to 100% and select some different voices (like American British-male, female, etc..) and see if you hear ANY distortion. I did on the 255w and some people say all GPS have some distortion at 100% volume (including Garmin).
Thanks
Peter

It's a friggin $3 USB cable, for Gods sake! I'm sure, if you bother looking, you can find one around the house. Your digital camera, for instance, comes with one.I swear, people can't find anything better to complain about, so they b*tch about it not coming with a $3 cable. Good grief.

I am searching the possibility to purchase a garmin GPS, but I have some doubts. A few weeks ago I traveled from city A to B, and took a interstate that should have been the easiest way for the trip. My Friend had let me borrow a garmin 205, and the gps kept telling me to exit the interstate and take longer routes. I tried to play with that gps and force it to follow the route I wanted to take, but I was unable to do so. Is this a problem related to the GPS or was something related to my lack of knowlege to use the system appriately. I like the features from the garmin 1300 series, but i do not want to buy a gps that keeps telling me to exit every two minunes when I know I am taking the correct route. Can anybody provide some feedback? Thanks

You have to change the settings for "fasted route" or "shortest route" or change the settings for things to avoid like "U-turns", "traffic", etc... I figured this out in Vegas when the GPS kept directing me around and away from "The Strip" (Las Vegas BLVD). I got a little frustrated because seeing the Strip is why you go to Vegas, right?! I searched around, found the setting, made the change, then everything was good again. I drove right down the strip and found my destination.

It is so nice to hear what the unit does NOT come with and add that in to your cost right away.
