Another hit and new game obsession!,

Skylanders SWAP Force is the sequel to Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Spyro's Adventure. I was skeptical at first about getting into the whole Skylanders franchise. We've done pokemon cards, beyblades, bakugan....so the idea of yet another collectable was a little off-putting. I wasn't sure I was ready for another type of toy for collecting and trading with friends. But I am happy to say my initial impression was way off. The makers of this game are nothing short of marketing geniuses.
You don't need to have played the previous games in order to play SWAP Force. The starter kit comes with it's own portal, the game itself and 3 characters: Wash Buckler (water element), Blast Zone (fire element) and Ninja Stealth Elf (she is not swappable but is one of the new series 3 characters in the life element). If you're not familar with the general concept of the game, each character has different strengths and weaknesses and represents a different elemental force. You place the character on the portal, and the portal recognizes the character, including what level it's on, and any treasures or tools it has earned. These qualities and upgrades are stored within the character statue rather than within your game system so the upgrades follow the character statue even when playing on someone else's game system (so my son can bring his statue to a friend's house and use it on other portals without losing his stats). Each character has an elemental affinity (Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Air, Tech, Magic, and Undead). Some characters will have an advantage based on the area of the game you are exploring. So if you're in a water based area, your water characters will have an advantage, etc. The starter kit also comes with a character collector poster, 3 sticker sheets with secret codes (for playing in the mobile game version) and 3 character trading cards.
The game can be played in easy, medium, hard, or nightmare levels of difficulty. There is also a Story vs Arena modes of play to choose from. If you are familiar with previous versions of the Skylandars series, this new series is familiar: Kaos is back and Skylands is once again in danger. There are new lands to explore and new battles to overcome to save Skylands.
Characters: the idea of having charcters with swappable powers is definitely a fun new twist. I like that when upgrading character powers, swappable characters will upgrade their tops vs bottoms separately. There are lots of new kinds of characters to collect: series 2 characters, new series 3 characters with their own upgraded powers and abilities, lightcore characters that light up when placed on the portal, and of course the new swappable characters. Each elemental force offers a mixture of each of these kinds of characters, and there are 2 swappable characters for each element. I also love the increased number of female characters offered. Female characters are not new to the Skylanders game series, (Hex has always been one of my all time favorites). There are many female characters offered now, throughout each of the elements. I like the idea of reinforcing that you can have a fierce looking, powerful girl character and that these adventure games are not just boy-centric. Finally, I love that all of our old skylanders characters from previous games can be used with the new SWAP force. This brings life back to all the characters we have collected so far, and helps open new games and lands for exploring. And I get to try out Hex in a whole new set of adventures. Well done Activision! A+
