I bought the GPSMAP40 for my 24" sail boat. First disappointment is the battery life. Even in low brightness (<30%) it holds 5 hrs max when it was sold for 9. The good point is that we can configure alarms (drifting on anchor ...) but there is no internal beeper !. Garmin said we must connect to an external audio device. Goooood for a supposed portable device. I try to read the sd card on my computer, can not. I try to connect with the USB cable, nothing. The documentation refer to the software 'Mapsource'. Garmin says '"MapSource is included with the purchase of a Garmin map on DVD or CD.". Unfortunately, I bought a blue chart g2 vision which was delivered on a sd card (270 USD !. The seller told me that I have to purchase the Mapsource software separately "MapSource is only included on automotive and topo DVDs/CDs. Garmin BlueChart pre-programmed cards do not support MapSource software, if you want to use it on your PC, you will need to buy Garmin HomePort software, sold separately: [...]

The last point but not the least is that my g2 vision map of Hong kong and China see has a so low def that it is better to use in basic design.
Conclusion: I probably should have bought another GPS, and definitely not choose the expensive G2 vision chart.
Remark: even a low cost gps can be connected on a computer easily.
