I had to admit I had no idea of what to expect with this new album. I sampled it and immediately it sounded like a repeat of their Heritage album. But I went ahead and bought it anyway so that I could listen to the whole thing through. I will confess I was a little disappointed in Heritage but wasn't completely dissatisfied. I truly miss the hard and crunching riffs that their previous albums contained like Ghost Reveries and the unique blend of progressive riffs that went along with it. But the more I listened to this new album Pale Communion the more it grew on me, just like when I first listened to the Damnation album the first time.
This new album in my opinion is a big improvement from Heritage because to me it seemed to contain some heavier riffs and it seemed a little darker than Heritage. To me the progressive rock riffs were way more catchier and more amusing to listen to. This album might not be according to the heavier stuff they have done in the past but if you listened to Heritage I think you will find this new album a big improvement.
I was hoping they would go back to the heavier stuff that they had done but this album was still a pleasant surprise. If you're an old school Opeth fan like I am, chances are that you might be a little disappointed. That's not to say that it's bad by any means. I'm just saying that if that's what you were hoping for then you may not want to buy this album. But if you liked Heritage and some of their older mellow progressive stuff then you are in for a real treat. I certainly was! I've been a devoted fan of Opeth for a long time and I was glad I took a chance on their new album Pale Communion. It was still a very good quality music cd, just what I would expect from Opeth. I do hope that one day they will go back to blending their own unique style of death metal and soft progressive rock along with it.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with Pale Communion and I have the funny feeling the more times I listen to it, the further it will grow on me and the more passion for the album I will find, very similar to my experience with the Damnation album.
