4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Solid Movie, January 5, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 47 Ronin (DVD)
This movie is based on a classic Japanese story (see "Chushingura") about the disgrace of a daimyo who must kill himself to retain his honor and what his now-masterless samurai (called ronin) do to avenge his death. Though this version has added Keanu Reeves as a "half-breed" and witches and demons, the movie is solid and says a lot about the centrality of the Japanese code of bushido to the nation.

Unlike another reviewer who chose to discuss and judge the values of that time rather than the movie itself, those values must be respected as an historical accuracy. That review would be much like giving "Gone With the Wind" one star for the South's reliance on slavery. One must deal with those values, and one must judge the film based on how good it is, not on the moral code of the times. This is a good action movie with some historical accuracy.

This movie stays fairly close to the original, adds in beautiful sets, action and adventure, and ends as it should.

Thanks, I was going to skip this one because of all the "bad" reviews I heard from others. I am looking forward to seeing it now.

I wonder if I was that reviwer. -) my review , I think I left it in the book not the dvd review anyway, cant be sure....but anyway, I do think the "witchcraft" overtones of the movie diluted the rawness of it all, like trying to combine peach and cherry pie....they are best served separately. Keanu I didnt even recognize until the film credits as i NEVER knew his forehead was so huge. I think they definitely miscast him for the role as a much rougher guy like Russel Crowe or someone of that ilk was sorely needed. I did think the guy who played the Japanese head Ronin who asked for his help was astonishing as you rarely see a Japanese man show emotion with a quality he showed. He in my opinion carried the whole movie. The ending to me was so disappointing as I felt that without spoiling it, they all should have died or none should have died who were left. The fact that this rediculous fictional ending could have actually and probabaly did happen thousands of times over, destroying just as many families if not more than the African slave trade did but this was not even for money, it was not really for was about the sign of the times...."that one man who is your boss has life and death power over you which you do not question without 'dis-honor." This leads me to my other comment in the book secvtion about what is wrong with us as a society if we dont gag and vomit watching these Ronin/Samurai.Musashi type movies in which men lay down their life because of the mere whim of their "Lord" dictates, is absolutely one of the most horrendous time periods in civilization, right up there with the Holocaust if you want to weigh "useless death events" against each other. This ending had no ending because nothing was solved, nothing was won, there was just going to be pain no matter what side won all because of this "Bushido code.' Let me make this clear......for those of you who arent seeing me clearly here.....How would you like to be a child growing up in these times your father is a hard working____, by day, Samurai once a year when his lord calls and then as you grow older and arent shielded from the fact that yuour father could be called to derfend the honor of a man you never met or possibly despise, you also find out that when your father returns home from every mission he may be asked to do the "honorable thing" and kill himself just because his 'employer" wasnt happy with the fact that he did everything her asked, but had maybe had too much Saki on the way back from a long hard won batttle and insulted his next higher up, an inconsequential man he didnt know was the Lords nephew and now your father may die for it. Or maybe get promoted!!! What the hell, life is short anyway right?(eyes roll) I remember in the John Gotti biography you can see right on you tube where his children all finally confided what itb was like "Growing up Gotti', Peter the youngest son I believe, said the main thing I remember about my father is that I was never able to shut my eyes at night all my years growing up until I heard the keys in the door turn. Then I know my dad made it thru one more day." Imagine the trauma that life would leave on kids today? So if you could imagine that, imagine the millions of kids who were not allowed to cry or show fear or pretend they even know where their father was going. And if their father did win the battle...there were no payphones or cell phones to call home and say Im ok, I will be back in 3 weeks on horseback." Then you had to hope they didnt get killed by another rival clan coming home. The fact that we can all sit back with our popcorn and chips and call this good entertainment is almost like watching snuff movies. There is no reason for either death to happen. All the martial arts schools popping up all over the usa and all over Europe and yet where are the schools that teach the truth....the Dalai lama's teachings...that if you have no enemies you cant have any war. Is this the way we are all going to go out. I mean us, the 25-75 yr olds whgo are still able to get something going to make Hollywood, the govt, the internet, the news media and whomever the hell else will listen that this is not like watching the movie the Godfather....this is just poison for the soul. You folks decide and tell me if Im right. As an aside...the fact that more men are committing suicide now than in any other time in the armed forces.......what is the connection between that fact and the Samurai code of old?
We never learn....the fact that history repeats itself over and over doesnt mean it will not also snowball thru hundreds of years of people giving them more gory and more lethal history to look back on so now when a 12 year old child watches the news and the story is about a mans head being cut of by terrorists.....nobody marches in the street anymore shouting "I DONT WANT MY DAMN KIDS, SEEEING THAT, ARE YOU CRAZY?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We all became apathetic and numb, and if our children soak all this in and only 5% turn into human killing machines thats just long as they arent ours and they arent from our neighborhood.
