Metropolis Ensemble: Vivian Fung,
This review is from: Fung: Dreamscapes (Audio CD)
The title "Dreamscapes" accurately describes this newest recording project by the Metropolis Ensemble of the music of composer Vivian Fung. Fung's music is evocative and unpredictable, providing a soundtrack to one of those epic dreams we all have when we oversleep by an hour. Her orchestrations, reminiscent of mid 20th-century chamber works, are fresh and engaging. Her solo instrument writing in both the violin & piano concerto are virtuosic, yet aurally accessible. Fung's non-Western influences have much to do with this, yet the synthesis of her two varied styles marry beautifully to create an other-worldy landscape.
Maestro Andrew Cyr deftly navigates the Metropolis Ensemble through the exciting maze of Fung's music and brings to life this rich offering with electric urgency. With all the musical families represented, we clearly hear each of them, almost as though we have the pleasure of having the score in front of us. Clarity and precision are at the top of the priority list as Cyr & Metropolis bring to the table a marvelous sampling of music by Fung, a composer who's music demands our attention.
