A little too cute and contrived,
This review is from: Working Stiff (Hardcover)
I will admit that this book is a fun read - but it's a bit like watching re-runs on television. It's entertaining, but there's something missing. While it was quite funny, in the end it was too contrived and too silly. There's the main character, subject to all sorts of fat jokes, with her trusty gay small person medical examiner sidekick with a cutesy nickname. They get into a bunch of silly scenarios, and, after the first few, the reader can see them coming. It's a bit like watching The Three Stooges - we know what pranks are coming. Then there's the hot cop who kisses the heroine at the weirdest, and least likely, possible moment. The prime suspect, our heroine's soon-to-be-ex-husband, is barely a two-dimensional character. Thus, our heroine's anger with him seems lukewarm. (She talks about it, but we can't feel it.) The reader is never really scared for possible suspects, because one keeps waiting for the next gag to take the pressure off anything potentially scary.
As I said, it is a fun read; I enjoyed sitting with the book, and read it in two sittings, which were accompanied by some chuckles. But I would not be in a hurry to read anything else written by this author.
