3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty camera but it's all around slow, and frustrating., December 6, 2013

This review is from: Pentax Q10 12.4MP with 02 zoom lens kit (Silver) (Electronics)
The allure of an interchangeable lens camera small enough to fit in the pocket and always have it on hand for those great shots pulled me in, but it just didn't measure up.
In theory it's a nice camera, but coming from a very decent SLR (nikon d5200) the incredibly slow focus and inability to take a picture when you want it to are just too much of a pain to keep it. I upgraded the camera and lens software to the latest and it improved the function a little but it still just thinks too long. I'm guessing 30% of the time I'd try to take a picture and it couldn't focus or took forever. It advertises 5 fps but that's only on low resolution jpg, if you want to shoot raw format it's 1.5 fps. I have high speed sd cards and it's still taking forever to save before it lets you take another shot. If you're moving up from a very basic point and shoot it looks cool and has nice artsy shot features you might like. If you've used a good camera before you're going to be disappointed.

Why would you even compare this camera to a Nikon D5200? Please learn a little more about cameras before comparing apples to oranges.

Hi there, I know this is an old review but do you remember if you had auto-focus on? Sorry if that's a dumb question, you seem pretty knowledgeable RE: the firmware and memory cards. I've been reading some reviews on the older Pentax Q and I remember the slowness was a big gripe but if it was manually focused the speed was supposed to be much better.

I've never had a nicer camera than a point and shoot. I know "slow" is a relative thing but I'd like to know if doing this would help. I'm illogically in love with the idea of the Pentax Q, so I would appreciate your honest feedback.

I have and use good DSLR cameras, and the Q is quite a good camera. A mirrorless camera is a different beast than a DSLR, and they are by nature less responsive. That said, the Q is a joy to use. The problem you're having with the slow autofocus will go away if you update the firmware. The AF on mine was pokey too, but the firmware update made a HUGE night-and-day difference. The AF is now lightning fast.
