Haunting, moving, and addicting...,
This review is from: Jane Eyre: The Musical (Original 2000 Broadway Cast) (Audio CD)
This recording, bought on a whim, has quickly become one of my favorite musical soundtracks. The songs are so beautiful both in lyrics and music that I've been brought near to tears listening to them... But it's such a quiet beauty-- not show stopping, flashy, and bombastic like so many shows nowadays. It's subtle. The melodies weave themselves into your mind without you even realizing.
There truly aren't enough good things I can say about it. Marla Schaffel does an AMAZING job. Her opening theme, Sweet Liberty, is gorgeous. The song Painting a Picture is heart-wrenching. It's hard to imagine how she was able to sing so beautifully and still capture the idea of Jane as this simple, quiet woman, but she does it.
James Barbour shows a flexibility in his singing that amazes me. "Good as You" is so soft and sad, while "Farewell, Good Angel" is harsh and desparing. "The Gypsy", a song that seems like it SHOULD get old after just a few listens, continues to entertain me without fail!
And kudos also to Elizabeth DeGrazia playing Blanche Ingram. She sings the kind of songs that I usually find frivolous and irritating, but her voice makes them great in their own way.
I'm lucky I stumbled across this one.
