This review is from: Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law (Hardcover)
Ms. Darwish's book gave me insight into a culture which I find completely baffling. I have never understood why the women in Muslim countries allow their men to have such power over them, why they put up with that crap. Now I understand that Islam is not just a religion but a political system and that the people born under it are brainwashed from birth to believe that everyone else in the world is unworthy of life if they are not Muslim. Except that there are many, many very good people who cannot hold such hatred in their hearts easily and it sets up a paradox internally. This is why the moderate Islamic groups do not condemn the actions of the crazy terrorist groups -- because the Qu'ran actually supports the work of the terrorists. So they just keep quiet and hope for the best.

In the meantime, the crazy men in the street (who are clearly sexually repressed because there aren't enough women to go around when the older, wealthier men are allow 4 wifes plus sex slaves) channel their sexual frustration into violence against anyone their Imams tell them to, in hopes of finally getting laid in the afterlife.

If they die while killing infidels then they hit the booty lottery and are presented with 72 virgin girls. I've never really understood this whole virgin-in-heaven thing...where do all these girls come from? Were they alive in the world once and this is their afterlife? If so, were they virgins when they died on earth before going to heaven, or did they get a new virgin body upon resurrecting in heaven. Is this a good thing for them? a reward? Let's see if I'm a Muslim woman and I live a good life my eternal reward might be an assignment to the virgin brigade for some guy who blew up women, children, and old people? Maybe being one of the 72 virgins is really a punishment for non-Muslim women. His-heaven/ Her-hell sort of thing...

Maybe Allah has a virgin factory up there cranking out virgin girls.
He'd have to in order to keep up with supplying the jihadists their 72 virgins each. You know, no one ever mentions what happens when the suicide bomber uses up all 72 of his virgins -- will they then become his 72 wives? Or will he get a new batch of virgins...I'm never clear on this.

Wouldn it just make more sense for these martyr-bound young men to just get themselves a girlfriend or two and chill out a little?

Ah...I digress. It's a good book and worth reading.
