Specious Nihilism You Can Tap Your Foot To,
This review is from: Chocolate & Cheese (Audio CD)
I got this album because I really enjoyed Phish's cover of 'Roses are Free,' and thought I might enjoy the original. I have news for you: the Phish cover is infinitely better than the original. I absolutely detested this album! I listened to it once, and tossed it in the trash can (literally; it's in with the vegetable peeings and coffee grounds until the city hauls it away). Ween are moderately accomplished musicians, able to offer a variety of pastiches, but that isn't so much to write home about. Most Bar Mitzvah bands can cover a comparable range of styles. What got me were the lyrics, which were sickening. Ween seem to revel the disturbing and grotesque, and because they offer it up deadpan, their fans assume that it is hip or sardonically cool. Not for the faint of heart or for those with even a modicum of good taste. I'd avoid it at all costs.

I usually listen to albums several times before I form an opinion. This album took me a few listens.

If I threw out all of the albums that had to grow on me for more than 1 listen, I'd be without a lot of great music (including a Phish album or two)...

Hey like Phish too(not as much as Ween mind you), but I don't think you were being very opened minded. Ween is not a jam rock band and need to be appreciated on a different level. If you were expecting heavy jams, and you can't appreciate an album that isn't all about jamming ad infintum, then maybe I can see your point.
Your comments on the lyrics are ridiculous though, especially since your a Phish fan. I know Phish doesn't go blue, but their lyrics is some of the worst tripe I have ever seen put to pen. Plus, you sound like some Trustifarian throwing away a brand new CD. Your snooty comments back up this vision....

Phish played my Bar Mitzvah and covered this entire album.

Too bad, man; you're obviously a smart cat. I agree I'm not a fan of Ween's lyrics, but these melodies are so superb, it still gets 5 stars from me.
