Great Printer, So-So Software,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Photosmart B8550 Inkjet Photo Printer (Office Product)
I set up the HP Photosmart B8550, but with some difficulty. My Dell computer has low powered USB 2.0 ports, so I earlier could not get my computer to recognize the Canoscan 8800F scanner - twain error ("scanner turned off or not connected...."). Well, I ran into the same thing with the HP Photosmart, so I got an AC-powered USB hub. Problem solved immediately.
HP software has a glitch, even with two-three tries at installation. In the fourth step, the dreaded "FATAL INSTALLATION ERROR" message pops up, striking terror into the hearts of man (and woman). It then tells you that if you hit Continue HP will search for a solution...... Well, there is no solution, call tech support. But then, with no prompting from me, the installation continues! Initialization is the last step - it freezes at 96%, who knows why? Yet, the installation window finally disappears, and there are no problems printing from the computer to the HP Photosmart B8550. Mysterious are the ways of installation software....... My only residual problem is the fact that I scanned and saved photos in Arc PhotoStudio 5.5 (came with Canoscan 8800F), but when I retrieve them for printing, they appear within my old, freebie Adobe Photoshop 2.0 that came with my Dell PC a few years ago. Try as I might, I can't get the pix into Arc PhotoStudio, so I have to print from Arc PhotoStudio after I have scanned from Arc through the Canoscan 8800F. Just shows what a computer doofus I am.....
Finally, I am using HP best photo paper (Premium Plus, I think), and it is superb.
