It looks like the thermometer had a defect that didn't keep the metal in the tube. They're supposed to have a constriction point that keeps the medium (mercury, galinstan, whatever) at its maximum level in the tube until you shake it down. The manufacturer should have offered you a free replacement. The video is very informative.
