It works but the Jiffy system is not only better, it's cheaper,
This review is from: Burpee Ultimate Seed Starting System (Kitchen)
As others have noted, the pellets do not always hydrate as they should because they have a tendency to turn sideways in the cell during the hydration process. As a consequence, it is nearly impossible to remove a seedling from that cell without damaging it or even killing it. Further, even if the pellet does properly hydrate in the cell, the seedling can still be difficult to remove because of the depth of the cell and the flimsiness of the tray.
Despite these drawbacks, the system does work, especially the self-watering feature.
I have found that the Jiffy refill pellets and trays are far easier to use with significantly less problems with removal of seedlings since the trays are much shallower than the Burpee trays. Also the Jiffy trays fit within the Burpee cover. Thus the Burpee self-watering feature can still be used.
In summary, the Burpee system works but the Jiffy system is easier to use in addition to being significantly cheaper. Thus I do not recommend the Burpee system.
