This review is from: Romance on Route 66 - Four Novellas (Kindle Edition)
Just playing around with the Kindle app, looking for an ebook to feed my Route 66 addiction. Looked at the low price, clicked the buy it now button, happy to see it appearing immediately for my reading pleasure.
The first few pages were enough. This is the sort of book which would be slung straight into the bin by any slush pile reviewer. I'm really sorry I didn't take a few seconds to check the free "Look Inside" preview before wasting my money.
Firstly, this book needs to be reformatted. If it looks more like a book and less like a text file, not only will it present better, it will make for a more enjoyable reading experience. Simply adding space after each paragraph helps the eye along. A new page for each chapter, each story. Run the bloody thing through a spellchecker!
But that's cosmetic. The writing itself is wooden and awkward. The dialogue doesn't flow - read it aloud to see what I mean. There's no tension in the situations - it's all too easy. And, basic error, show don't tell.
Route 66 needs to be more of a character. That's the theme of the book, right? The old road and romance. Just setting the stories in places along the road doesn't cut it. People have to be moving, using the road, enjoying the atmosphere. Gimme the taste and feel of Ted Drewes. The cold of the custard, the throng of the crowd.
All in all, this is an amateur effort. A first cut at what could be a great set of linked stories.
