3.0 out of 5 stars Missing scenes in 'Battle' are unforgivable..., April 28, 2001
By
This review is from: Planet of the Apes - The Evolution (DVD)
A brilliant series that is captured perfectly on DVD.
However, there is one flaw: there are two scenes that appeared in the original 'director's cut' of Battle for the Planet of the Apes that were left off the DVD:
1. before the mutants leave to attack ape city, Governor Kolp shows Mendez and Alma the doomsday bomb, and instructs them to launch it at Ape City if he should not return.
2. at the end of the film, Mendez and Alma decide to not launch the bomb. instead, they worship it - with Mendez as the leader.
These two scenes nicely round out the entire series, but were only shown in the TV version. Why Fox didn't include them in the film, or at least as special features, is beyond me.
It's unforgivable. That's why the series is only getting 3 stars.

Actually this release is the extended version of the film with those two scenes (and several others) restored.

@tyr!I too noticed that the parts was missing you mentioned! so the DVD from Evolution set has 86 Min Run time and this DVD has that Amazon selling is 96 Min, So I have to buy a new copy of Battle for the Planet of the Apes or the Blu Ray version with all 5 Ape films

Thanks GeneBean for describing which edition you purchased, which most people don't do (and Amazon gloms together all reviews). I ended up with the short version also, in the Apes: Legacy Collection set. I just discovered that the full version is included in Classic Quad Set 18 (Battle for the Planet of the Apes/The Day The Earth Stood Still/The Neptune Factor/The Poseidon Adventure) and isn't too costly.

How is this one different from the Legacy Edition? Are the missing scenes from Battle For The Planet Of The Apes in it or just the blu-ray?

Well honestly, if you are not buying the Director's Cut version, then I don't see why you would expect this version to be like that one. The 3 star review is, I believe, unfair. If you were buying the Director's Cut and it did NOT contain those scenes, then you might have a legitimate complaint. It's like when people on here give a product a one-star review to, for example, a piece of software because it doesn't work with their computer even though it doesn't say that it would! (They are running Windows XP, for example, and the program is designed for Vista and later, etc). I see this sort of thing all the time.
