This is a short yet powerful look into the mindset of colonial Americans as they debated declaring their independence from England. Paine makes a compelling case for declaring independence and presents a clear argument against rule by a monarchy. And for those at that time who were advocating delaying a decision he also presents a strong argument for the necessity to act immediately. I read Common Sense years ago as a student but I didn't appreciate it then. I can now marvel at Paine's foresight as well as at the cogent argument he presented for the public. This remains a compelling read 200+ years after it was written.
