Coated in oil...,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Duracell Coppertop D Batteries 8 Count (Health and Beauty)
The batteries were covered in an oily goo. I couldn't tell if it was from the batteries or not, but some of them were discolored and slightly misshapen. Not what I expect from a brand name battery!

A. Mead says:
Oily goo is almost certainly electrolyte leaking from battery. Case distortion might mean batts were crushed or overheated. Throw them away or return for refund. Confirm goo's alkalinity by testing with pH paper. If you don't have any at home, seal the leaky battery in a plastic bag & ask a nearby kid to check pH of goo in the chem lab at school.

I had a similar experience with an 8 pack of Duracell D batteries.
Four of them failed in the original package!!
Scott Adams might suggest that they were made in Elbonia.
At any rate, I still have the dead soldiers and do not plan to buy any more Duracells.
