This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 9055-LM GPS navigator (Electronics)
All GPS units have some likes and dislikes of their owners and many of the negative reviewers either have little tech ability, little patience, do not take time to read instructions, and/or are too used to the workings of another make. One GPS device may be good for some people, and not for others. There is no perfect GPS unit and not everyone will agree on what is important. One may work well in one urban community/road area and not in another. Not everyone likes the same things and not everyone is creative or can figure out how to use them. This is a very good unit for the size, money, and functions. Don't have any GPS unit in a real sunny location and don't obstruct your view or look at it too closely while driving; have a passenger use it as none of us should be distracted from driving. I really dislike my TomTom 630GO, the updates, the usability and it doesn't seem to understand eastern Washington, and I really like the Magellan set-up. I have issues with my lexus GPS and with my son's Honda GPS. And I do not use all of them regularly to keep it all figured out, but this unit is really easy to figure out and use, and it does not lock-out when driving.
This is an excellent vehicle GPS (not for walking around) and I bought it over others because: the built-in AAA guide has many benefits and I am a member (it needs to be updated, too), it has a large, easy to read screen, great volume, it is bluetooth compatible, and it has a reliable, well designed mounting system (depending on your vehicle). I had not seen a suction system that does not eventually fail and break something, but I like the extended mount this comes with, and the Akron lighter socket GPS support with the lighter extension for local traffic usability. If you have a small car, get a 4.3 to 5" max GPS. If you have a truck, SUV, or a deep dash this size is good. One reviewer said it is the same map on this as a 4.3 unit. Rediculous!!! Of course it is same, just as a 60" TV gives you the same movie borders as a 20" TV; just larger not more map, and that makes it easier to read and push the screen. The plugging in of the power plug is simply shown on the first page, why people complain about the power mount is beyond comprehension; follow the directions and it works very easily. Some complain about how curvy or sharp edged the roads appear or the color format; you better have your eyes on the road most of the time and this really does not matter. This unit works great, and I have experience with many types. Yes there is only one voice, so does your parent, partner, friend, or boss, why do people need more voice choices or a celebrity voice? Can you change the voices of your TV announcers? Why is this an issue? Yes, a few words are garbled a bit, but it is not really a big deal as it is chip based and will not sound perfect. It does what it is supposed to do. My advice is to decide what really matters to you. In my case, size, mount, AAA, and bluetooth mattered. It is a great unit and has many pluses over other makes. There is no "Ideal" GPS for everyone. I highly recommend this unit and feel it is a great price for what you get. It does what it is supposed to do so 5 stars is what it deserves. I believe too many supposed tech savvy people don't read instructions, and everyone should download, print, and read the pdf manual for maximum function and appreciation. Bon Voyage!

You are "right on" with so many points. This is by far the most honest review of a 9055-LM I have read. There's nothing else I could say nor change about what you wrote. I am impressed with my unit. It does crack me up that this is a navigation device and it's technology and functionality are so based yet people are concerned that there is just one voice? Amazing. Good review. And a good review for those who are thinking of getting this unit. Last thing I will say is because this unit is larger than most others, so is the speaker. I have found that the audio from the 9055-LM is clearer than the smaller units.

David Allan says:
I agree wholeheartedly with this review. One feature you didn't mention is that this GPS connects with a backup camera. I have that set-up and it works great on my small SUV. The one thing I don't like about it is the suction cup. It leaves viscous goo on the windshield, and after two years has deteriorated to the point of uselessness. If I could just replace the suction cup it would be OK, but Magellan wants to sell you the entire mount and charge $49, which is excessive.
