3.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, with poor Iphone/ipad software, November 3, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The camera has excellent quality and the pan features make it a high value for the dollar. I am disappointed in the iphone/ipad software. It does't seem to get the camera to load at all. I have tried it both with 3G and with a local wifi connection and the software still doesn't work. I don't have any problems viewing security cameras through commercial services on my iphone or ipad.

The documentation isn't very clear either. I took my relatively advanced level of networking skills to get the camera to work over the internet. They had a domain that they use, that is supposed to work, but I could not get it to work. I had to manually configure a port through the router's firewall, and finally guess at the IP address of the camera to work. Once I did that, it worked very well over the internet. IE9 version of the software the comes with it likes to crash, and the software for the other web browsers tend to be sluggish, especally when trying to pan

Bottom line is this is an excellent camera if you are looking to use it on a PC inside the same network it is on. If that is how you use the camera, it is easy to use. If you are planning on using it on a PC over the internet, it will be a test of your networking skills the you may enjoy. I don't know if I enjoyed the test, but I did enjoy passing the test. If you are planning on viewing it on your iphone or ipad, this is not the camera for you.

I give the software 1.5 stars, but the camera is a solid 5 star. If they would fix the software this would be a first class product at an excellent price.

it's not as hard as you might imagine, or the poster leads you to believe. Granted i'm a network Major, but the first step is to get the address of your router, there are many ways to do this but usually the easiest is to check your documentation that came with the router. then you forward A port (doesn't really matter, could be 80, could be 1024) to the ip address of the camera, you can use portforward.com to figure out how to forward for your particular router. as far as determining the ip address, your router will have a tab that tells you all the ip addresses of everything connected to it. may take a little finangling but feel free to comment back if you need some help

Mr. J. Brine says:
I only need it for home & works fine, I can't seem to work it wirelessy, it works well through the cable?

Use IP Cam Viewer in the App Store... If you can set up port forwarding, this app will work seamlessly with the camera.

Mr. J. Brine,
I just saw your post, you have to connect it via cable first, then configure the wireless. it can be a bit of a pain, but I have one connected wirelessly in my living room and the other is sitting in my utility room (sadly I'm forced to go wired on that one as I managed to snap the antenae :P) there should be a setting under configuration that will allow you to add your SSID and password. you may need to change the security encryption of your network, it's been over a year since I last had to configure mine and it's been chugging along like a champ. I love it. I use no-ip.org to make it easy to access, as most residential and some cheaper Commercial plans assign dynamic addresses.

T. M. Gunkler I'm an android guy, it's been a while since I set one of these up on the iphone, does apple offer that app in the appstore? I know with my camera it has a built in mic and the pro version of Ip cam viewer supported listening to the audio (that tickled one of my clients pink because he could now listen to the reception area in his office) and to boot the pro version was only ~4$. Supposedly this camera supports a speaker for two way communication but I have not played with that function...yet...
