It can't be denied that Jesse McCartney's songs are catchy. It's no feat to "write" catchy songs in today's Teen Pop World. But what only a few artists can achieve, and what Jesse McCartney fails to achieve, is a sense of uniqueness. Anyone who can release an originalsounding album, in spite of its blatantly commercial nature, has truly accomplished something. Jesse McCartney's songs all sound like Backstreet Boys or *NSync throwbacks, with a bit of Justin Timberlake thrown in. The boy band faze died a couple of years ago but he seems to have failed to notice. It's clear that he hasn't escaped his roots, something Timberlake managed to do remarkably well. Timberlake, who has released the best post-boy band solo album thus far, clearly is also an inspiration to McCartney, but where Timberlake aimed at seductiveness and true pop genius, McCartney's songs seem aimed at a much younger age group, perhaps because of his associations with Disney. If McCartney ever wants to accomplish anything beyond gracing the backs of Disney movie soundtracks, he should sever his ties with the company, get some good producers (Timberlake used the Neptunes), and drop his preteen goodie-goodie image.
