Be a dummy and waste your money, or...,

...be smarter and purchase something which at least contains helpful information. Unfortunately, I did waste my money on this book and found it totally unorganized and of very little practical help. I've been curious about many of these so-called "for Dummies" type of books. If this is an example of one, you could do much better by either contacting the American Numismatic Association (ANA) at their website at
<[...] or a wonderful and little known website entitled: "Coin Facts" which is found at <[...] The Coin Facts website is the best reference source I have found for coins----I've been collecting for over 25 years. Even better, the websites are free to browse and print from. In addition, every state in the US has a state coin association and they always love to help folks---especially young persons. I've found great enjoyment not only in coin collecting but MEETING the many interesting folks who engage in this endeavor. You don't need to purchase any book which denigrates the reader even in its title--especialy when it gives such poor and disorganized material.

To Mr. "A Customer"; I agree with you about the denigrating title of the "dummies" book line. But please, this section of Amazon's empire is for a critique of the merchandise and customer service of their merchants. I personally believe you should be critiquing the book instead of advertising for other sites. If you critiqued properly, then you could be "helpful" and give the websites. I know, they don't sell like Amazon but we should remember our purpose in this website cubby-hole. I am considering the book because I am an old man just beginning a new hobby because I have "aged out" of my more athletic endeavors. If I buy, I'll critique and/or praise.

The funniest thing about your review is the ANA website you say is so much better than the book has an article recommending books for a beginner to the hobby. The first book they recommend and call "a great place to start" is this very book, Coin Collecting for Dummies. Very amusing to me :)

With all due respect, I think discussing other books and sites is a very good practice. That hasn't prevented me from continuing to buy Amazon books and other products listed through Amazon.

I think this is a silly critique. I would prefer a reliable book for the numismatic beginner to websites, but I am not for censorship of any kind, websites or books. I don't think Amazon is in any danger of bankruptcy because it allows citation of websites--in fact, that reflects the company's strength.
