This review is from: OtterBox [Commuter Series] Apple iPhone 5 & iPhone 5S Case - Retail Packaging Protective Case for iPhone - Black (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Pre-ordered the case, pre-ordered the phone on the expectations that Otterbox made quality cases. Received the case before the phone and looked it over, not overly sleek but felt like it would protect the new phone well.
When the phone finally came in, the real problems were evident. Port covers DO NOT latch closed, Power button is very difficult to press, hard plastic sleeve is bowed when the device is inserted with the silicon protector. The port covers, no matter how carefully the device is inserted, just do not latch closed properly resulting in two tiny lumps protruding from the bottom of your svelte new phone. No real benefits if they do not close as they cannot protect from dust from entering the ports.
It's heading back to Amazon if I don't get a reply from otterbox, whom I've already contacted through the support email. Utterly disappointing fit for this price. At 15 dollars, maybe, but not 35.
UPDATE 9/23: Otterbox has no answers and recommends returning the case to Amazon. Back it goes..

It sounds like the item you got either was defective, or not a "real" otterbox

James R. Davis says:
It was genuine, including the Otterbox holographic sticker on the back of the packaging. Seems more like Otterbox rushed to get the product to market without appropriately confirming the molds were accurate enough to function properly on the actual device. Early adopters always learn the hardway I guess.

I purchased my OtterBox Commuter a week ago, and the port covers do latch closed (they have little bumps that allow the flap to stay shut.) Perhaps they altered the design in response to complaints.

D. Ritchie says:
I completely agree with the poor fit on the phone. The bottom portion is a poor design, the silicon is too thin and flops around, making the phone look cheap. The silicon took 5 days to fully stretch into place and meet up with the hard plastic, until this point the corners were sharp and caught on fabric of my pockets. Long conversations are not comfortable because the case creates a hard lip against the ear. And the first time I dropped my phone, the hard plastic broke and snapped off at the bottom, because the plastic is so thin. No damage to the phone, though; which ultimately was my first priority with a protective case.

OMG! I thought it was just me! I just received mine a few days ago and I swear I thought the power button needed to be broken in - like a pair of shoes! I am now using 2 hands to turn the phone off! As far as the ports being protected, I can already see that they will wear down quickly- I have had mine for 4 days and its barely staying closed.
My husband has the a defender Series and for all of its bulk ones - his button works like a charm!
This case is going back!
